The end of the Constitution?

It’s some pretty scary stuff.

First, go look at the most recent This Modern World, called Franksly Speaking.

What Tom Tomorrow is referring to is an recent interview given by General Tommy Franks, recent head of CentCom, to Cigar Aficionado magazine. The most frightening thing is that Franks is probably saying what a lot of people in the current administration are already thinking, and, given their reaction to 9/11, it doesn’t seem at all unlikely that another terrorist attack would result Bush and his cronies trashing our civil and political rights in the name of “protecting America.”

This is something that needs to be taken seriously by everyone who thinks that the Constitution is an essential part of what America is, rather than something to be tossed aside in some desperate attempt to protect the hollow shell that would remain. As Benjamin Franklin said, in a quote that’s seen quite a lot of use since 9/11, “They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.”
