Nice photo-op, Mr. President

President Bush snuck into Iraq today to have Thanksgiving dinner with some of the troops there. While I’m sure that most (if not all) of the soldiers were glad to have him, the fact is that this is another Presidential campaign stop for Bush, this time using his supposed concern for the troops as cover. He wants to be seen as supporting the troops, but at the same time he and his administration won’t attend the funerals of soldiers, or allow pictures of their flag-draped coffins. He wants to be seen as supporting the troops, but he’s sending National Guard and reserve troops to Iraq with dangerously outdated equipment. It’s all one big farce.

Oh, and ignore that fact that at the same time he and his minions are out there saying that the security situation in Iraq is improving, this trip was on the verge of being cancelled if any word at all had leaked out. I guess the President only likes to say, “Bring ’em on,” when he’s home safe, and it’s another matter all together when he has to go where the enemy might actually endanger him.

I’m no Bush guy, but I think what he did was totally cool. Nice job Mr. President.

As you can probably tell, I disagree. Or rather, I’d probably have thought it was cool if I believed it was anything other than a cheap campaign stunt, using the holiday and the troops for political gain. Given the President’s previous actions though, I’m not about to give him the benefit of the doubt.
