Getting better mileage….in China

While the Bush administration pushes its farce of an energy bill, the Chinese are actually doing something about their dependence on foreign oil:

The Chinese government is preparing to impose minimum fuel economy standards on new cars for the first time, and the rules will be significantly more stringent than those in the United States, according to Chinese experts involved in drafting them.

I’m hardly one to cheer for totalitarian governments, but this is what happens when a country decides that its strategic interests are more important than the whining of automobile manufacturers. Plus, as a side benefit, it’ll be good for their environment too. Imagine that.
