Standing up for themselves

The people of Bolivia have spent the last month fighting back against a plan to sell the country’s national gas reserves. It’s just the latest in a long series of neo-liberal plans that have seen most of Bolivia’s citizens getting poorer, while foreign companies, and those in Bolivia who cooperate with them, exploit the nation’s resources. The army has resorted to violence to keep control, and, most recently, to keep more and more protesters from joining those in the capital, La Paz, but the people are determined to win out, and support for the country’s President is failing. The United States, of course, backs the plan to sell the natural gas (to us), no matter what the people of Bolivia may want.
