The truth?! We can’t handle the truth!

Still no WMDs in Iraq? Apparently the American people don’t care.

The general citizenry doesn’t seem to care whether those weapons are discovered or not. Americans tell pollsters they do not mind that WMD haven’t materialized and are not even withholding judgment while the search goes on. Some now believe the war was justified on other grounds. Some believe the weapons exist despite the lack of evidence. Some actually believe that WMD have been discovered. And some even believe that the Bush administration outright lied about WMD, but they don’t care.

As Michael Kinsley points out in his recent column, many Americans apparently don’t care that Saddam didn’t have any WMDs at the start of the war, and don’t care that Bush lied about it. Once again, the American people seem to want to go out of their way to reward their leaders for lying to them, and then turn around and whine that you can’t trust politicians.

Fortunately, there are some indications that the tide may eventually turn on the issue of Bush and the WMDs, but we’ll see how it ends up playing out.
