More prisoners than China

“The number of people in jail in the United States rose to more than two million for the first time ever last year, the government has said.

Official figures show the US has the biggest prison population in the world, and the highest number of inmates as a proportion of its population.”

I really don’t know why this is supposed to be better than having decent schools and an economic system that doesn’t stomp on the poor, but I’m sure our benevolent government has its reasons. Note that these figures do not include any of the people our government has disappeared since 9/11.
